Over the weekend, my buddy, James, and I visited a local brewery. As any photographer would do, he brought along his lens collection. One particular lens that caught my eye was his 50mm Prime lens at an f1.8 aperture. This is significantly different from my standard 18-55mm kit lens. As prime lenses have a fixed focal length, you have to move closer or farther from the subject in order to change the shot. The benefits of a focal length lens though provide a shallower depth of field, as well as providing more light into the lens (a result of the higher aperture). These features give a slightly different look to portrait shots as you can see below.
